Developing ideas - Idea 1
For my first concept I would use the song '99 shades of crazy'
by JJ Grey & Mofro:
This music video is about a baseball game that turns into a fight after two of the parents watching, start arguing. There are also shots of the band in a different location with low, dull lighting. Whilst the center of focus is on the baseball narrative, the band have a lot of screen time and it gives the video some contrast, making it more engaging.
For my music video, I would use a similar theme and have a main narrative that carry's the music video throughout and a sub narrative that helps give the music video a more versatile feel with two different things happening.
My main narrative would involve a middle age man that has problems with his marriage. The music video would start with him at home having an argument with his wife that leads to him storming out. He goes to a pub and starts drinking. He then realises he has no money to pay and he gets thrown out. By this point he is drunk and is walking down the street with no where to go. He then goes to the local park and falls asleep on a bench. He wakes up the next morning, hungover and heads back home only to find his wife and kids have left him.
I partly chose this song because of the lyrics as they sometimes match the narrative. For example at the start (when they would be arguing), the first verse goes:
"I can't agree to disagree
Fighting like I'm fighting for life
They're only words but the cut like a blade
swinging wide with all my might''
Then the first phrase of the second verse goes:
"Pour another drink make it a double for me"
At which point, he would be in the bar drinking. The lyrics clearly reflect the narrative and I want to aim to try and to make it as if the artist is narrating whats happening in the music video. In post, I would use slow motion in all of the shots to reflect the slow paced tempo and I would mostly have tracking shots and motion shots however I would use a steady cam to smooth everything out and make it more fluid.
As well as this I would use shots of the band performing the song to the camera. This would most likely be filmed in the studio and would only be used occasionally.
