My favourite film

When it comes favourite films, I find it very hard to chose one as there are so many good ones. However my top 3 favourite films/ film series would have to be (not in order)

  1. Step-brothers
  2. The MCU films
  3. Back to the future trilogy

But for the sake of this essay I will choose the film Step-brothers as it never fails to make me laugh and it’s honestly one of the only films that I feel I will never get bored of. Here is the trailer and a plot review from IMDB:

“Brennan Huff and Dale Doback are both about 40 when Brennan's mom and Dale's dad marry. The sons still live with the parents so they must now share a room. Initial antipathy threatens the household's peace and the parents' relationship. Dad lays down the law: both slackers have a week to find a job. Out of the job search and their love of music comes a pact that leads to friendship but more domestic disarray compounded by the boys' sleepwalking. Hovering nearby are Brennan's successful brother and his lonely wife: the brother wants to help sell his step-father's house, the wife wants Dale's attention, and the newlyweds want to retire and sail the seven seas.” - review

There are many films that feature the dream team of Will Ferrel and John C. Reilly such as Talladega nights however Step-brothers is the ultimate, untouchable film that I am yet to see a comedy that tops it. The pair’s chemistry is unmatchable and when you combine that with the genius directing of Adam Mckay, being the head writer of two SNL (Saturday night live) series, the outcome can only be nothing short of hilarious.

I think one of the main things I like about the movie, is the narrative because the two characters’ journey is so funny, from how they started out hating each other to getting to be best friends to then hating each other again and then finally taking Roberts advice to grow up except when they do, Robert can’t stand it and motivates them to be childish again. It’s also really ironic as they both are so similar yet it takes them forever to realise it and even when they still hate each other they are agreeing on so much. For example in this scene they have just had a massive street fight and they knocked each other out and are now sitting on the sofa getting told off by their parents.

Facts about the film

  • The estimated budget was $65,000,000
  • They made $30,940,732 on the opening weekend
  • It was produced by: Columbia Pictures, Relativity Media and Apatow Productions
  • The runtime is 106 mins (unrated)

Mentionable errors

At the beginning of the film, Nancy states that Brennan is 39, later on in the movie Nancy is talking to Robert about how when Brennan was 17, his brother Derek won a talent show by lip-synching “ice ice baby” If we assume that the movie takes place in 2008 then the talent show was 1986. Ice ice baby was realised in 1990…

In the treehouse scene, Derek mentions he hasn't had a carb (carbohydrate)  since 2004” In the dinner scene prior to that, he was drinking a Heineken, which is mostly in fact carbohydrates…

Despite there being some mistakes in this film, it doesn't take away the fact that the film is an absolute classic comedy.
